Huon Nitrogen Exceedance Report
An assessment report on the environmental impact of Huon Aquaculture Company’s exceedance of dissolved nitrogen limits in the Huon River and Port Esperance Marine Farming Development Plan area between 2015 and 2016 has been completed. Dissolved nitrogen output limits are calculated as a
rolling 12-month total. Once the limit is exceeded, it may take a period
of time before the 12-month total is once again below the limit.
Huon Aquaculture was directed by the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment to pay the full $260,000 costs of the scientific assessment to identify any environmental responses to the nitrogen cap exceedance.
The Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) was engaged to undertake the assessment.
The assessment involved a thorough analysis of environmental conditions and finfish marine farming nitrogen emissions across the region, and an assessment of environmental data collected through the regulatory Broadscale Environmental Monitoring Program prior to, and during the period of exceedance along with biogeochemical modelling undertaken by the CSIRO.
The Department has provided the report to the independent Environment Protection Authority, which now oversees environmental compliance of the marine farming industry, for its review.
