Report Marine Farming Debris

The Tasmanian Government, as part of its Sustainable Industry Growth Plan for the Salmon Industry, has identified prevention and management of marine farming debris as a priority.

If debris poses a hazard to navigation, contact Marine and Safety Tasmania 0418 145 439.

Reporting Marine Farming Debris (DPIPWE)

If you come across marine farming equipment outside a marine farming lease area i.e. on the water or washed up on the shoreline, you can report your sighting to the Marine Farming Branch (DPIPWE) by sending an email to: mfops@dpipwe.tas.gov.au

Where possible, the email should include:

  • Location of the equipment, being as detailed as possible (include GPS co-ordinates if available)
  • A description of the marine farming equipment including any specific identifying features (branding, text, colour)
  • The date and time that the debris was found
  • Your full name and telephone contact details
  • Photos of the marine farming equipment
  • Anything else that is relevant to the notification.
Note that we may not be able to investigate marine farming debris if the notification is anonymous.

Your Personal Information
Personal information collected from you will be used by the DPIPWE for the purpose of verifying information relating to a marine farming debris notification. All personal information will be managed in accordance with the Personal Information Protection Act 2004.

Your personal information will be used for the primary purpose for which it is collected, but may be disclosed to the contractors and agents of the DPIPWE, other law enforcement agencies, Courts and other organisations authorised to collect it.

Reporting Marine Farming Debris (TSGA)

The Tasmanian Salmonid Growers Association (TSGA) manage a Marine Farming Debris Hotline: 1300 DEBRIS (1300 332 747) and the Debris Tracker App as part of a system for reporting, recording and removing marine farming debris in Tasmanian waters. They are an initiative of the Tasmanian salmon industry and contribute to the safety of mariners and the Tasmanian Government's zero tolerance approach to marine farming debris.  All reports submitted via the Hotline and the App are sent to the salmon company closest to the marine farming debris for removal, the Marine Farming Branch (DPIPWE) and Marine and Safety Tasmania (MaST) for appropriate action.

The Debris Tracker app is available to download for iPhone and iPad from the Apple App Store and for Android from the Google Play Store.

Whale, Dolphin & Seal Entanglement

Should you find an entangled whale, dolphin or seal (dead or alive), please call DPIPWE's Marine Conservation Program on the Whale Hotline: 0427 WHALES (0427 942 537).

Do not attempt to disentangle the animal - wild animals can present a significant safety risk.
