2009 Commercial Scallop Season
There was no commercial Tasmanian scallop season for 2009. There was however a commercial season in Bass Strait that allowed licensed Tasmanian vessels to participate in this fishery.
The Bass Straight fishery (the Bass Straight Central Zone Scallop Fishery) is managed by the Commonwealth, and there was a 2,500 tonne total allowable catch for the 2009 season.
Surveys conducted in Tasmanian waters during 2008 on potential future beds had indicated that a 2009 season was unlikely owing to the small physical size of the scallops surveyed. Targeted surveys were organised to resurvey these beds in 2009 and verify the growth rates and condition of these scallops.
