Popular Species

Inside Georges Bay are bream, silver trevally, garfish, flathead, Australian salmon, King George whiting, snapper and squid.  Offshore species include tiger flathead, striped trumpeter, morwong, tuna, blue-eye trevalla and mako shark.

Local Fishing Spots

St Helens Wharf, Beauty Bay, Kirwans Beach, Talbot Street, Cunninghams Jetty, Stieglitz Jetty, Akaroa, Burns Bay, Maurouard Beach, Dora Point and Binalong Bay.

Points of Interest

  • Georges Bay is a Shark Refuge Area. No taking of sharks, skates or rays other than elephantfish. Netting is also prohibited in the Bay.
  • A designated recreational-only scalefishing area, Georges Bay is known for its diverse species including garfish, trevally, King George whiting and bream. 
  • The offshore waters of St Helens offer both deepsea and gamefishing action.  Fishing charters are available for inside Georges Bay and offshore.
