Popular Species

Australian salmon, Atlantic salmon, red cod, greenback flounder, whitespotted dogshark, brown trout, silver trevally, barracouta, morwong, mullet, bastard trumpeter, pink ling and blue grenadier.
 

Local Fishing Spots

Ocean Beach, Macquarie Heads, Swan Basin, Strahan Public Jetty, Regatta Point, Lettes Bay, Kelly’s Basin and Cape Sorell.

Points of Interest

  • Macquarie Harbour is the only waterway in Tasmania where recreational gillnetting is allowed at night.  Netting is not permitted in the internal areas of the harbour to protect the endangered Maugean skate.
  • The Maugean skate is a protected, endemic skate found only in Macquarie Harbour and Port Davey.
  • Macquarie Harbour entrance is a no gillnetting area to protect Little Penguins.
  • Great surf-fishing action is available off Ocean Beach or at Macquarie Heads with catches including Australian salmon, mullet and gummy shark.
