Where to Fish

Popular Species

Australian salmon, mullet, barracouta, sand and bluespotted flathead, whiting, silver trevally, snapper, snook, pike, blue warehou, tailor, cod and gurnard.  Offshore species include mako and gummy shark.

Local Fishing Spots

Bakers Beach, Squeaking Point Jetty, Port Sorell Jetty, Moorlands Beach, Reg Hope Park, Horsehead Creek, Mussel Rock Lighthouse, Mersey Bluff, Don Heads, Turners Beach and the Leven River.

Points of Interest

  • Port Sorell is a Shark Refuge Area. No taking of sharks, skates or rays other than elephantfish.
  • Recreational gillnetting is not allowed in the Port Sorell estuary. Commercial gillnetting is being phased out of this estuary with only two fishers allowed to fish with gillnets.
  • Flathead have good survival rates if you handle them gently and use a fish de-hooker.
