Fruit Fly Fumigation Service - Information for growers

FUMIGATION SERVICE SUSPENDED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

Following the detection of fruit fly in Tasmania, a fumigation service is being provided to producers/wholesalers within the Devonport Control Area which will allow treated product to be moved outside the declared Control Area.

Fumigation requirements:

  • Host material moving within the Control Area must comply with Schedule 1B of the Plant Biosecurity Manual Tasmania 2018.

  • Only authorised officers may release host material (as listed in Schedule 1A of the Plant Biosecurity Manual Tasmania 2018) from the Control Area unless it has been fumigated and complies with Schedule 1B of the Plant Biosecurity Manual Tasmania 2018 before being moved outside the Control Area.

  • Host material presented for fumigation must comply with Schedule 1B of the Plant Biosecurity Manual Tasmania 2018 for transportation within the Control Area.

  • Host material must be presented with a core temperature of no less than 11°C and no more than 16°C.

  • Host material must be presented dry, as condensation can cause damage to produce.

  • The producer must ensure that where produce is packaged or covered with impervious materials (such as plastic bags, stacked plastic punnets or waxed paper), this covering is opened, cut or removed to allow adequate penetration of the gas. This is unless impervious materials contain:

(a) Not less than four unobstructed perforations of 6 mm diameter per 100 cm2; or

(b) Five unobstructed perforations of 5 mm diameter per 100 cm2; or

(c) Numerous pinholes (at least 6 holes per square centimetre).

Note:  Fumigation consignments that do not meet these requirements when presented (e.g. too cold/warm and/or condensation present) will be delayed.

Fumigation booking information:
