Identifying Sheep & Goats for Agistment

When sheep or goats are moved out on agistment or for other purposes, records of the movement are to be kept by both parties for a period of 7
years.

Sending Sheep & Goats on Agistment

Make sure that all the sheep and goats are correctly NLIS tagged.
  1. Keep a record of the following information and provide the same information to the property where the sheep and goats will be agisted:
    • PIC of your property.
    • PIC of the property they are moving to.
    • Description and number of sheep or goats being moved.
    • If the sheep or goats have been bought in you will need to keep a record all the PICs on the NLIS tags in the group unless you have tagged the sheep/goats with a pink post breeder tag registered to your property.
    • The date of the movement.
    • National Sheep Health Statement.
    • National Goat Health Statement
    • Copy of all information provided to the receiving property;
  2. If lambs/kids are likely to be born whilst the sheep/goat are out on agistment make arrangements with the agistment property to provide NLIS breeder tags registered to the agistment property so that the lambs/kids can be NLIS identified before they leave the agistment property.

Sheep & Goats Returning from Agistment

  1. NLIS identify any lambs/kids born on the agistment property with an NLIS tag registered to the agistment property.
  2. Check the NLIS tagging of the sheep/goats and NLIS identify any untagged (lost tags) sheep/goats with a post breeder tag registered to the agistment property.
  3. Keep a record of the return of the sheep/goats at both properties including the following information:
    • PIC of the agistment property.
    • PIC of the property sheep/goats are returning to.
    • Description and number of sheep/goats being moved.
    • A record of all the PICs on the NLIS tags in the group unless they have all been identified with a NLIS post breeder tag registered to the agistment property.
    • The date of the movement.
    • National Sheep Health Statement.
    • National Goat Health Statement.
Recording all the PICs in the group: This means that if the sheep/goats in the group have NLIS tags on them from three different properties then you would write down the three PICs in your record.

Note: If the sheep/goats are to be sold rather than moving back to their original property then you will need to sort out a Vendor Declaration form to go with the sheep/goats that identifies that they are moving from the agistment property. You will need to discuss this with the agistment property and you may need to order LPA Vendor Declarations.
